Nature’s treasure trove – 200 years of Naturalis
On 9 August 2020, exactly 200 years had passed since King William I founded the National Museum of Natural History. Over the span of two centuries, what once began as the king’s personal collection has grown into one of the largest and most important collections in the world. This treasure trove of natural history includes an astonishing 42 million objects.
In the anniversary exhibition ‘Nature’s treasure trove – 200 years of Naturalis’, the 25 ‘crown jewels’ will be displayed from the collection. This will be the first time, or the first time in many years, that it will be possible for the public to admire these remarkable objects.
These highlights and their stories will be displayed for 200 days, after which they will be returned to their places in the collection tower. Taken together, objects such as the extinct Cape lion and Darwin finches shed light on the impressive history of Naturalis.
