Canal Museum

At the Grachtenmuseum, visitors discover why the Amsterdam canal belt remains so special after more than 400 years. The permanent exhibition is housed in an authentic canal house on the Herengracht, right in the historic heart of Amsterdam.

During a journey through five consecutive rooms, visitors are transported to 17th-century Amsterdam. With the aid of scale models, projections, animations, light, sound, and interactive elements, the story behind the construction of the famous canal belt unfolds.

In the impressive final room, a large-scale model of the Amsterdam canal belt literally brings the history of the city to life.

Designed by Kossmanndejong Kloosterboer was responsible for the construction of this permanent exhibition.
