When the Russians come
Last Friday, Minister of Defense Ank Bijleveld opened the historical exhibition "When the Russians Come," an exhibition about the Netherlands and the Cold War, at the National Military Museum (NMM) in Soest. An audiovisual journey featuring artifacts from the Netherlands and abroad evokes the threat of the Cold War. A detailed Polish military map from 1970, depicting the invasion of Western Europe, demonstrates that it was serious.
This temporary exhibition takes you on a sonic journey through the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. The 3D sound tour lets you experience a world divided between East and West, focusing on the Netherlands' role in the international context.
The exhibition examines the events and developments from a political, military, and social perspective. News flashes, special loans, iconic music and film excerpts, and a nuclear experience offer both the ears and the eyes a compelling overview of this tense period.
The exhibition can be visited from February 22 to September 2, 2019
