Cartography & Curiosities

The new exhibition at the Maritime Museum, Cartography & Curiosities, shows how the wider world was discovered from Amsterdam, and how the world came to Amsterdam from the Golden Age onward. The presentation features maps by Amsterdam cartographers from the Maritime Museum's top cartography collection. This exhibition reveals how our Amsterdam ancestors navigated the seas during the Dutch Golden Age and how their voyages shaped our worldview. Using these centuries-old maps, visitors embark on a journey to the locations that shaped Dutch history: South Africa, Indonesia, Japan, Australia, and Brazil.

The second part of this presentation is titled "Curiosa": a treasure trove of eye-catching objects that brought the whole world into the Dutch home during the Golden Age. Here, visitors will marvel at wall maps, globes, atlases, travelogues, as well as souvenirs, trinkets, and artifacts, each symbolizing the journeys from the first part of the exhibition.

The exhibition will open to visitors on May 10, 2019.
