The Black Page

2014 marked the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Dutch slave trade. In 2013, we commemorated the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. Without shipping, the transatlantic slave trade would not have existed. The slave trade is therefore part of the Dutch maritime history. To commemorate the abolition of slavery and the slave trade, the National Maritime Museum is highlighting this dark side of the Golden Age.

The exhibition allows you to experience life aboard the slave ship Leusden. Both the hell for the prisoners below deck and the crew's existence above deck are explored.
