Geert Groote (1340–1384), a preacher of repentance and theologian, is known for his Brothers of the Common Life and Modern Devotion. In a new building built on the foundations of an old chapel, the spiritual story of Deventer's most famous resident is told.

Design agency Tinker Imagineers has found contemporary parallels to historical themes from Groote's life. For example, his fight against ecclesiastical greed is counterbalanced by the role of recent profiteers during the credit crisis. All these stories are presented in colorful collages where past and present intersect.
