North/South Line showcase
During the construction of the North/South metro line in Amsterdam, more than 700,000 archaeological finds were unearthed – from lost wallets and glasses to axes and spearheads from the Stone Age. A selection of 10,000 objects is on display at Rokin station, right between the long escalators that take passengers to the platform. A continuous archaeological journey that naturally takes you through Amsterdam's history.
Kloosterboer designed and built the display cases for this exhibition. The display cases had to follow the slope of the escalators and fit seamlessly into the station. This required a complex puzzle. The escalator's angle determined everything: from the glass construction to the lighting and even the way objects could be mounted.
Passengers spend about two and a half minutes on the escalator, during which time they can explore the illuminated display cases. The objects are divided into ten themes, each a window into a different part of the city's past.
