Invaluable – 200 years of Naturalis
August 9, 2020, marks the 200th anniversary of King William I's founding of the National Museum of Natural History. What began as the king's personal collection has grown over the past two centuries into one of the most extensive and authoritative collections in the world. A natural history treasure trove of no fewer than 42 million objects.
The anniversary exhibition "Priceless – 200 Years of Naturalis" showcases the 25 masterpieces from this collection. These special objects are on display for the first time, or at least for a long time. These masterpieces and their stories will be on display for 200 days, after which they will return to their original locations in the collection tower. Objects like the extinct Cape lion and Darwin's finches together shed light on the impressive history of Naturalis.
