Exhibition The Golden Coach
On Thursday, June 17, 2021, His Majesty King Willem-Alexander opened the exhibition The Golden Carriage Officially opened at the Amsterdam Museum. After a restoration lasting over five years, the Golden Coach is once again on public display.
The carriage is housed in a glass enclosure in the courtyard of the Amsterdam Museum. Visitors can view the restored carriage up close. In the six museum galleries surrounding the courtyard, with views of the Golden Carriage, the exhibition highlights a variety of stories.
Besides the construction and development of the climate-controlled glass enclosure, Kloosterboer was also responsible for the exhibition's interior. Hundreds of cultural-historical objects, paintings, trinkets from the House of Orange, clothing, cartoons, photographs, and film clips offer a multifaceted glimpse into the history and use of the Golden Coach, as well as the past and present debates surrounding this iconic vehicle. This exhibition highlights diverse perspectives on this controversial rolling heritage. The Amsterdam Museum also invites visitors to share their views. They can also create an alternative Golden Coach using augmented reality.
The Golden Coach is a multi-voiced exhibition created by and in collaboration with an interdisciplinary research team with diverse specializations. Various stakeholders—curators, researchers, restorers, contemporary artists, and members of the advisory group—told King Willem-Alexander about their contributions to the exhibition during his visit.
We thank the Amsterdam Museum for their trust and this unique commission. Thanks in part to the dedication of our subcontractors, we were able to achieve this together. It was remarkable to experience how the Golden Coach served as the unifying force, inspiring everyone to achieve this wonderful result.
