FLUGT – Refugee Museum of Denmark

The Danish Queen Margrethe opened “FLUGT”, Refugee Museum of Denmark. This new museum tells the story of refugee generations who had to flee their homeland due to various circumstances.

FLUGT is located on the site of the largest refugee camp from World War II in Denmark, in the woods outside Oksbøl. It shows the connection between the local history of Oksbøl and the refugees of today. The impressive building was designed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and consists a curved modern building made of wood and glass. The museum exhibition is designed by Tinker imagineers. The museum experience consists of several exhibition rooms and an outdoor area.

On behalf of and in collaboration with Tinker Imagineers, Kloosterboer developed, produced and installed the new permanent museum presentations for FLUGT.

The new museum gives face and voice to refugees worldwide and tells their stories, emotions and hardships. The personal stories of the refugees are brought to life with visual highlights, sound scapes, animations, interviews, and original film material. When you have visited the exhibition inside the museum, the experience continues outside. A model of the camp as it was at the time, built from a base of colored concrete and cut Corten steel, takes a prominent place in the new outdoor area.

The current refugee theme provided an extra strong connection during the development and construction process with a respectful and meaningful end result.

We thank FLUGT & Tinker imagineers for this special assignment and the efforts and great results of all parties involved.

Kloosterboer was responsible for the interior construction, outdoor objects including electromechanical exhibits and some interactive lighting arrangements.

The museum has been nominated for the European Museum of the Year Awards 2024. The winners will be announced in May 2024 in Portugal.
