Present of the slavery past

With "Afterlives of Slavery," the Tropenmuseum aims to introduce its visitors to the current, contemporary legacies of slavery and colonialism in the Netherlands. For many Dutch people, the relationship between the history of slavery and the present is unclear. Yet, the consequences of this history are still palpable for large groups in our society. It is primarily Black Dutch people for whom the link between slavery and inequality, racism, and discrimination is painfully clear. Therefore, the exhibition "Afterlives of Slavery" focuses on the stories of the enslaved and their descendants.

To spark a sometimes difficult but productive discussion, eight key figures in current debates share their perspectives on the legacies of slavery in video portraits. In this way, the Tropenmuseum aims to inspire further exploration and awareness of the topic. The exhibited objects from the Tropenmuseum's collection, tangible remnants of the history of slavery, contribute to this.
